The little things can make a huge difference when it comes to an event. A few well-placed decorations, a fun theme and a few practical additions can take your event to the next level.

Hosting a backyard gathering with your family and friends is always an ideal opportunity to enjoy the sun in the warmer months. That is, however, until you realise you only have eight seats for the 20 people you invited, and there’s no gas left for the BBQ!

Increase the entertainment value of your backyard by adding a few little touches that will turn your backyard into your holiday at home, with no need for last-minute panic.

Here’s how to decorate your outdoor entertainment area for whatever fun activity you’re planning this season:

Plan your space

A well-designed area will make a world of difference to how you entertain, and the great news is that it doesn’t matter if you’re decorating a large backyard or a small courtyard! The same rules apply to both.

  • Rain, hail or shine

No matter where you’re located in Australia, our weather can seem to turn in an instant! Make sure you’re prepared for whatever is thrown your way on your entertaining day.

If you have an alfresco area or covered space, you’re in luck! If not, simply ensure you have a large umbrella and sunscreen handy if the sun is in full force, an indoor backup area if storms are on the horizon, and something to weigh down tablecloths and napkins if the wind picks up!

Even in the warmer months, it can get a little chilly as the sun goes down. Why not add a basket with some blankets and throws to your outdoor space? These can also be added decoration for a pop of colour on outdoor lounges.

  • Musical chairs

There’s nothing worse than arriving at a gathering and realising there’s nowhere left to sit! If you don’t have enough outdoor furniture to seat your guests, it isn’t time to panic. Request your guests BYO camping chairs, throw down a picnic blanket or some beach towels and chairs, or add some outdoor cushions to your lawn!

Add the décor

The little things can make a huge difference when it comes to an event. A few well-placed decorations, a fun theme and a few practical additions can take your event to the next level.

  • Theming

For more significant gatherings or events, why not add a theme for a bit more fun? It will also help the fabulous host (aka – you!) with planning and preparation by narrowing down your list of options into a handy little group.

  • Centrepieces

You don’t have to go too crazy and start searching for second-hand wedding decorations to make your event look chic. Go simple with a vase of fresh or dried florals, add a few tea lights or pillar candles, throw down a table runner or create a charcuterie board to be the star of the show.

  • Lighting

Like in your home, lighting can make or break an outdoor space. For a flattering glow, try to include at least three light sources. Hang fairy lights overhead or along your veranda, light up a fire pit and use a standing lamp like Conrad on the deck! Candles also look fabulous on your outdoor table, or if you’re going for a tropical theme, opt for lanterns.

  • Fun in the sun

Kids aren’t the only ones that like to play in the sun! Add lawn games like giant Jenga, backyard cricket or Bocce to your event for a bit of fun. Some bubbles and chalk never go astray for the kids or opt for a fun playmat to help keep them busy.

And don’t forget to make a playlist with your favourite songs!

  • Sip, sip, hooray

Add fun glassware to the table to set the scene for a more formal event, such as a cocktail party or sit-down dinner. Make sure you have alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available to cater to everyone.

When the host is having fun, everyone has more fun! With some preparation and a little help bringing everything together, you will have an incredible day and/or evening with friends.
