Whether you call it a doona, duvet or a quilt, you’re technically correct.

With different materials and fillings, various product names and excessive industry jargon, trying to choose bedding that suits your family’s needs can be a little confusing.

We’ve broken it down so you can find the quilt that’s right for you, without having to get a specialised degree first!

What’s the difference?

Whether you call it a doona, duvet or a quilt, you’re technically correct. All three names refer to the exact same product! Here’s a little back story on each of the well-known names for our cosiest of bedding products:

  • Doona
This name originated right here in Australia and refers to a trademarked brand name by a local bedding manufacturer. It’s similar to how Americans often refer to tissues as ‘Kleenex’ or how we refer to plasters as ‘Band-Aids’.
  • Duvet
The word duvet is French for down. This name is most commonly used in Europe and the UK, but is also quite popular in the United States.
  • Quilt
In modern British English, the word quilt refers to the exact same product as above and is likely derived from the process of quilting.

What’s your sleeping style?

Before you select a quilt, you need to consider your sleeping style.
Think about where you are in the country and the climate over the year. Do you need something for mostly warm weather or cold nights? Are you a sweaty sleeper, or do you put your cold feet on your partner to warm them up? How you sleep will depend on the quilt you need.

For the kids

Left to Right: Greenfirst Bamboo Quilt, Sleep Easy Mattress Protector

While most adults prefer a heavier weighted quilt (especially in winter), children will generally feel a lot more comfortable with a lighter weight quilt. After all, their bodies are much smaller than ours! Breathable fabric like bamboo is the perfect choice for your little loves and is great for allergy and asthma sufferers. Pair their bedding with our Sleep Easy Mattress Protector to help keep everything dry in the case of any night-time accidents.

Choosing your quilt

Choosing Quilt
Left to right: Dual-Layer Quilt, Thermal Balancing Quilt, Healthy Fibre Quilt, Wool Quilt

Let’s take a look at our range of quilts and what sleeping style they’re best suited for:

Dual-Layer Quilt: Ideal for all seasons, our dual-layer quilt features two 200gsm quilts that can be used together or separately. When joined, the quilt will capture three air pockets, resulting in a warmer and cosier nights’ sleep. When separated, it is a lighter, summer weight quilt.

Thermal Balancing Quilt: Do you suffer insomnia, hot flushes or sweat while you sleep? Our thermal balancing quilt works to absorb, store and release heat as needed, so your body stays at an optimal temperature all night.

Healthy Fibre Quilt: Featuring an antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-dust mite BioFresh™ treatment, this is the quilt for you if you suffer from asthma or allergies! Featuring 300gsm filling 100% hollow polyester fibres, this quilt will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer.

Wool Quilt: If you find it hard to regulate your body temperature while sleeping, consider grabbing a Wool Quilt. This one is 100% wool and helps to relieve the body of thermal stress.

Greenfirst® Bamboo Quilt: The Greenfirst® chemical-free and anti-dust mite treatment within this quilt are fabulous at combating common irritants. If you have asthma or eczema or prefer a lighter weight quilt, this will become your best friend!
