Updating your bedroom for winter is an absolute must-do. You don’t want the same look going on in there that you’ve had all summer long. A true Lorraine Lea stylist knows that you need to mix up your boudoir vibe each season. It’d be criminal not to!

When the days get shorter and the temperature turns down, you want to embrace different colours, patterns and textures in your space. So let me show you how to do it four ways with some of Lorraine Lea’s new-season quilt cover sets.

Go literal with the theme

Selwyn Quilt Cover Set

From now until September I like to turn down the colour in my bedroom and embrace a more wintery vibe. You can do this quite literally by introducing a quilt cover set that’s more forest-inspired in its look and feel.

The monochromatic colour palette of Selwyn not only delivers a winter motif, but it’s not going to overstimulate the eye, making it perfect for those of you needing to evoke calm in your space.

This is a soothing set for the cooler months, and if you bring in faux fur accessories like throws and cushions, you’ve set the scene for warmth, rest and relaxation. Mix and match this set with white, silver, grey or black sheets and you’re going to have a bedroom look that feels quiet and cohesive.

Also don’t forget about taking the winter vibe into your ensuite. If you aren’t matching your bedding set to the towels in your bathroom, you’re only telling half the style story!

Embrace large pattern

Not everyone loves a neutral black-white-grey bedroom scene, and that’s absolutely OK. The good news is that you don’t have to take your bedroom in a monochromatic direction in winter if you don’t want to. You can embrace colour and pattern in the space. It’s just wise to keep the scale of the pattern in mind, as well as the saturation of colour.

Pattern does a lot of work to keep a room from feeling boring, but you also want to ensure it doesn’t feel too visually overwhelming. A quilt cover set like Franz is my top pick for bedding walks that line perfectly.

The large brush stroke pattern is bold and beautiful, but not chaotic. And the colours used throughout feel rather turned-down. Pull one colour from your quilt cover set and replicate it in your ensuite towels and you have two rooms that feel connected and full of cold-weather character.

Turn down the tone

Taya Olive Quilt Cover Set

People often get stuck in a mindset that some colours are ‘summer’ while others read ‘winter’. That’s not exactly the case. It’s more about the tone of the colour you’re using and the mood that it’s going to create in your room.

For example, green can be used in a bedroom year-round, but the tone should change. A bright, zesty lime green is very much a tone for summer. But when the cooler months arrive and you want the scene to feel moodier, you want to look to a darker green like olive.

The new Taya Olive is a dream come true for anyone looking to still rock colour but in a refined way. It’s rich and grounded in tone, which creates a real sense of sophistication. Adorn it with some faux fur throws and cushions in lighter tones and you’ll have created a bedroom that ticks both the colour and texture boxes.

Keep it classic

Mursa Quilt Cover Set

Keeping your bedroom black really leans into the cosy winter vibe. It’s an obvious choice because it’s failsafe, it bridges all ages and genders, and it brings with it a sense of timelessness.

You do need to make sure your space is packed with pattern and texture to stop it feeling flat though. The quilt cover set you use in winter, for example, would benefit from a bold print or strong textural details, to give the room depth and dimension. The new Mursa is a wonderful option because it makes a statement without feeling too loud.

Layer the scene up with cushions and throws to evoke cosiness, and you’ll end up with a bedroom that feels warm and welcoming. Don’t forget the accompanying towels in your ensuite either. A dark charcoal or black would work wonders here.
