Perfect for curling up on the couch at night or as an additional source of warmth on your bed, throws can be draped, folded, flung, or positioned anywhere! PLUS, they are an extremely cost-effective way to introduce seasonal style to your home.

The good news is that there is no correct way to style a throw rug, but that can sometimes make it hard to decide which look to go for in your home.

Here are our 11 favourite ways to style a throw to give you a little inspiration:

1. Across the corner

The casual ’throw across the corner of the bed’ technique gives your bedroom a contemporary and relaxed feel. The across the corner works best with a textured throw but be sure to choose a colour that complements your quilt cover or any artwork you have displayed in your room.

2. Neatly folded

For more of a sophisticated look, neatly fold your throw lengthwise into thirds. Style it by draping over the back of your couch and ensure it is slightly off centre. For this look to stay neat and tidy, make sure your folds are even, and tuck your throw behind your couch cushion to keep it securely in place. Keep it simple, and don’t overcrowd your couch with cushions. One to two is plenty. Minimal is best!

Try our NOOK Barcelona Blanket for this look.

3. Waiter-style

One of the easiest ways to style your throw is to fold it and drape it over the arm of a chair, much like how a waiter may hold a cloth napkin!

4. Casual cascade

Relaxed, inviting, and warm, the casual cascade is one of our favourites!
Remember that you’re going for a haphazard look, so there is no need to style this look too much.

The easiest way to get this look is to pinch the throw at its centre, then drag it over one of the couch’s back corners. Play around with tucking a bit here and there to create an effortless flow, and cover up any lumps or bumps with a single cushion.

This look works best with a throw with fringed edges or a bit of texture like our chunky knitted Meridian Throw Rug.

5. Basket case

One of the easiest styling options, and the perfect option if you don’t like too many accessories on your couch. Simply add a decorative basket like Nora next to your couch or bed, and toss your throw rug inside, easy peasy! Style by pulling out one corner of the throw so that it hangs out over the edge. You can also add a cushion on top if you’re feeling a bit fancy!

A throw rug with tassels or fringing on the edges works best for this look. Try our Aspen Throw Rug in brandy, sugar or grey.

6. Open sesame

This option is perfect if you have pets or young kids as your couch is protected from any muddy paws or little spills! Open up your throw and drape it across the back of your couch. Position this in the centre for a more symmetrical look and style by placing your favourite selection of decorator cushions in front of it.

7. Hanging out

Just like how you would hang up your towel on a towel rack in your bathroom, try styling your lightweight throws by hanging them on a rung of a decorative ladder next to your couch or bed. This also makes them super easy to grab if you’re feeling a little chilly in the evenings.

8. Corner fold

This look is great for chaise lounges! Try folding your throw lengthwise and then in half. Angle the throw so it lies flat across the corner of the seat cushion and style with some decorator cushions.

We love pairing our Ashley Throw Rug with our Allegra or Velvet Cushion Covers!

9. Show both sides

To add a little depth to your room, create layers with your throw rugs to display different textures. You can also use a single reversible throw and show off both sides by adding a fold or draping your throw casually on the side of your bed or couch.

10. Get cosy

Using a dark coloured throw on a light bed will create a feeling of cosiness and make a larger bed feel more intimate and inviting. Drape the throw all the way across the foot of the bed to style.

Try our Feathertop Throw Rug in grey. It’s the perfect texture to add some warmth to your bedroom in the cooler weather.

11. Bed end

Style up a simple bedroom by folding a coloured or patterned throw lengthwise and lay it across the end of the bed. This will break a solid bedding colour up or can work in conjunction with the quilt cover to highlight a particular colour. We love using the Willow Throw for this look. Available in several colours with a silky-soft texture it’s the perfect addition to your space.
